2002 WOOD CARVED DEAF ASL SUBJECT, BAS-RELEF BY DENTAWA MANOI CALIFORNIA

Due to changing and unappealing Ebay policies I am gradually reducing all of my listings, and here offer an item with reduced starting bid...no reserve price.
A year after Dentawa Manoi, who was born deaf, carved this bas relief (2002) sculpture, he was awarded "The Artist of the Year" by the Art Alliance of Idyllwild, California. He was 24 years old at the time this was carved.  Dentawa has been a Master wood carver, a performance artist and a video maker during the past 20+ years. He was officially called Master Sculptor at the Cathedral City Art Gallery.  This example is highly personal and deeply related to him, as stated on the reverse label...which you see in 2nd last photo which states,
"Growing up - Alone, Poor, Isolated, Depressed - the Only One Deaf".
It is signed near the bottom reverse, dated 10/02, and has his age noted as 24. The piece shows a woman at the top signing, a baby at the bottom...perhaps a self portrait of Dentawa as a baby, being touched on the lips with a sign.  At the center are two eyes with tears streaming downward... This is a touching sensitive work.  It measures approx 18" H x 7 1/2" W and 1 1/4" thick.  The rear label states the wood is teak.  The weight is approx 3 pounds.
