Description
Up for your consideration very rare original terracotta sculpture made by Katsuzo Satomi (1895-1981). Signed in lower right; signed and dated (1975) on the back.Katsuzo Satomi was born in June 9, 1895 Kyoto, Japan. After graduating from the Tokyo Art Academy, Satomi went to France in 1921, where he studied under Vlaminck . His "Note on Visiting Gachet" -was printed in Japan in the literary-artistic magazine Shirakaba . From 1922 he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . During his stay in France, his contribution " Seeing Rouault at the Paris Exhibition" was published in the magazine Chuo bijutsu. It was the artist's first performance in Japan. – Satomi also introduced his slightly younger colleague Saeki Yūzō to Vlaminck.
In 1925, Satomi returned to Japan and exhibited six paintings created in France, including "Memory of Marlene" at the 12th Nika-kai Exhibition. For this he received the Chogyu Prize. In 1926, Satomi participated in founding the "1930 Society", in 1927 he presented seven works at the 14th Nika-kai, including "Reclining Woman". He won the Nika prize at this exhibition and became an associate member of the Nika-kai. In 1929 he left the 1930 Society and became a full member of the Nika-kai. But in the following year he separated from this society as well and participated in the "Society for Independent Art". This company left Satomi in 1937 to be fully independent.
After the Pacific War, Satomi became a member of the Kokuga-kai in 1954 and has exhibited there ever since. In the same year he revisited Europe and met again with Vlaminck, Gachet and Zadkine.
Right from the start, Satomi took an anti-academic position and was associated with Fauvism throughout his life. His representative works include "Nude" (1926) and "Woman" (1936). He translated a book about Vlaminck and wrote one himself entitled "Vlaminck". In 1995, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, a memorial exhibition was held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
